Simulation Project
Promoting the Use of Simulation Technology in
Florida Nurse Education

Qualitative Research Findings for FCN Simulation Project
This executive summary is based upon primary qualitative research conducted in each region of the State of Florida among key stakeholders identified as educators, employers, community representatives / leaders, nurses, and nursing students. As well, it is based upon insights gained from in-depth interviews with people who supply technical resources involved in simulation, State of Florida legislators, and funders.

Addressing the Nursing Shortage through Simulation (White Paper) The project goal is to maximize the use of simulation technology in the preparation of new and continuing education of current Registered Nurses in Florida thus addressing the nursing shortage by increasing the nurse supply through increased production and retention. The Project Team will include Florida Center for Nursing staff, UCF College of Nursing faculty, and a national expert in nursing education and its use of simulation. An advisory panel will be established to provide expertise and promote collaboration. The proposed project will be conducted over a two-year period.

Proposed Plan for Year One
Year One will focus on data collection and analysis of results. Once established, the advisory panel will serve as a resource to the project team. A white paper on the use of simulation in nursing education will be produced. Surveys of educators and employers will be conducted, analysis of results completed, and, in addition to the report of findings, recommendations for future actions provided. As a parallel activity, Eight regional focus groups will be conducted with participants' who represent diverse populations (i.e.: educators, employers, community representatives, legislators, consumers, funders), can contribute to understanding the potential uses of simulation at the local level and willingness to share resources, and serve to support future recommendations that may include regional simulation centers.

Proposed Plan for Year Two
Year Two efforts will focus on identification of a strategic approach to achieve the overall project goal and development of a state and regional model for strategy implementation. A statewide summit will be held to bring representation from the 8 regions and policy leadership together to: review survey and focus group findings; reflect on the meaning and potential impact of the findings; provide input on proposed strategies to maximize simulation usage; and assist in dissemination of outcomes to a broad audience. Strategies will be identified and, as feasible, implemented to disseminate findings and proposed plan of action. This may include hard-copy report distribution to the Florida Legislature and development of a web-portal for statewide sharing of simulation scenarios and information.

Evaluation of the collaborative process and partnership in completing the project will be conducted by The Blue Foundation utilizing the services of a national expert. The evaluation expert consultation will be will not be funded as a part of this contract.
